The most important rule is to make your content readable and is suitable for reading. For large block texts you should always try the CSS to separate the lines to give adequate space between them. The font size should also be increased optimally to make it readable. The best font for web sites would be Verdana and should be around 12 pixels tall size text for optimal reading.
If your web site has 1000s of articles to browse through make it easy for them to find a particular article among those pile of articles by using good searching option with it. Try to use search engine that has SQL based database. It should always be easy to use for your visitors.
Make your web site to load faster as many would leave your website if it takes longer time to load and will start searching for other sites for reference.
